Trivia from KINCHO

What is Pyrethrum?

Japanese name: Shirobana-Mushiyoke-Giku / English name: Pyrethrum

Pyrethrum is a perennial plant in the Asteraceae (daisy) family, native to Serbia (formerly part of Yugoslavia) the Mediterranean and Central Asia.
It produces white flowers that resemble marguerites.
It has long been known that the ovaries of pyrethrum flowers contains the insecticidal compound "pyrethrin," which was traditionally used in flea powders and other applications.

Pyrethrum was introduced to Japan in the late 19th century. Eiichiro Ueyama, the founder of KINCHO, obtained seeds from the United States and promoted its cultivation throughout Japan. This led to the invention of the world's first mosquito coil, paving the way for the development of various household insecticides.
